Student Ghettos Spoiling Quality of Life

Students are wrecking the quality of life in some areas of the UK, according to a recent Government report.

The report, compiled by the Department for Communities and Local Government, says that the growing number of students in higher education has increased the size and number of enclaves of rented housing.

Some students are also causing problems for their neighbours by inconsiderately parking their cars, dropping litter and by making low-cost housing unaffordable to locals.

Out of term time pubs, shops and other local facilities are forced to close because they are under-used.

The Government is considering legislation to see if the number of student houses, termed homes of multiple occupancy (HMOs), can be more tightly controlled by local councils.

Housing and Planning Minister Caroline Flint said: "It is not acceptable that in too many areas people living in HMOs and local communities alike are having their quality of life affected."
