A-Level Alternative Introduced

Another alternative to A-levels, aimed at preparing students for university study, has been approved by the exams watchdog.

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has given the green light to the Cambridge Internation Examinations "Pre-U" qualification, which is intended to "stretch and challenge" even the brightest of students.

The two-year Pre-U will compete with existing A-levels and the forthcoming Diploma. Students will be examined by essay style questions at the end of the two-year study period. The Pre-U will be offered in 26 subjects, including subjects such as English, Maths and Science.

Several high profile private schools have declared their interest in the qualification, which will also be made available in state schools from September.
